CONTACT IMPROVISATION INTENSIVE Friction as a Living Dialogue

CONTACT IMPROVISATION INTENSIVE

Friction as a Living Dialogue

This intensive brings together two complementary approaches to movement: improvisation as a creative exploration of the unknown, and the body as a complex system shaped by friction, risk, and relational intelligence.

Across four classes, we approach Contact Improvisation as a space where opposition and resolution coexist. Friction becomes a living dialogue — a continuous exchange of forces, intentions, and listening — where creativity emerges through contact.

Combat Dance — with Shifu Ash

Combat Dance is a perpetually evolving reference system — an archive of embodied knowledge developed through the hybridisation of multiple movement practices.
The practice focuses on revealing the hidden connections between inner and outer space, offering high physical challenges, complex combinations, and an emphasis on speed, dynamics, and risk.

The work includes:
• collaborating with the human structure to preserve musculoskeletal health and enhance efficiency
• developing mind–body connections through playful improvisation
• exploring harmony and alignment with universal patterns through scientific and spiritual metaphors

Combat Dance is not about aggression, but about awareness, precision, and intelligent use of force.

Improvisation as Exploration — with Raúl Saldarriaga

Improvisation is not a tool to achieve perfection, but a playful practice of exploring the unknown.
Raúl approaches Contact Improvisation through the technical application of contemporary dance floor work, offering a precise yet creative framework that supports freedom, clarity, and adaptability.

The work focuses on:
• technique as a living tool rather than a fixed form
• the relationship between intention, perception, and action
• playfulness as a serious strategy for research and performance

Who is this intensive for?

This intensive is for dancers and movers with interest in Contact Improvisation, contemporary dance, or related movement practices, who want to deepen their relationship with technique, risk, and improvisation as a performative and investigative practice.
